With the growing aging population, age-related diseases have increased considerably over the years.In response to these, Ambient Assistive Living(AAL) systems are being developed and are continually evolving to enrich and support independent living. While most researchers investigate robust Activity Recognition(AR)techniques, this paper focuses on some of the architectural challenges of the AAL systems. This work proposes a system architecture that fuses varying software design patterns and integrates readily available hardware devices to create Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs) for real-time applications. The system architecture brings together the Service-Oriented Architecture(SOA), semantic web technologies, and other methods to address some of the shortcomings of the preceding system implementations using off-the-shelf and open source components. In order to validate the proposed architecture, a prototype is developed and tested positively to recognize basic user activities in real time. The system provides a base that can be further extended in many areas of AAL systems,including composite AR.

Service-Oriented Architecture(SOA) is employed in a wide range of applications because it promises to expose computation-intensive tasks as services and combine them with new applications to accelerate their applications development process. For service-oriented multimedia applications, the performance of multicasting transmission services under multimedia traffic must be evaluated. Multiview Video(MVV) is a promising and emerging type of multimedia traffic that consists of multiple video streams, allows stream switching, and requires strict Quality-of-Service(Qo S). In this study, we investigated multicast transmission of MVV in wireless cellular networks with Partial Frequency Reuse(PFR) and focused on two challenging problems:(1) multicast group formation and(2) subchannel and power allocation. Initially, we propose a novel Content-based Partial frequency reuse Diversity Grouping(CPDG) scheme to allocate users to multicast groups on the basis of Partial frequency reuse Diversity(PD) in wireless networks with PFR. After group formation, an optimization problem for subchannel and power allocation is formulated to minimize network power consumption under Qo S constraint. Thereafter,the optimization problem is divided into two subproblems and solved using simplex method and Karush-KuhnTucker(KKT) condition. Finally, to solve the optimization problem, a suboptimal scheme referred to as Partial frequency reuse Diversity Based Energy-efficient Multicasting(PDEM) is proposed by dynamically allocating wireless resources under Qo S constraint. The simulation results show that the proposed PDEM scheme can achieve close-to-optimal performance. Moreover, mathematical analysis of the effect of PD on network performance can provide guidelines for optimization of multimedia traffic in multicasting-enabled wireless cellular networks with PFR.

With the rapid development of cloud computing and big data processing, an increasing number of application frameworks are being considered to run in a "cloud way". This development brings about several challenges to the enterprise private cloud computing platform, e.g., being able to run most existing heterogeneous applications, providing scalability and elasticity support for newly emerged frameworks, and most importantly,sharing cluster resources effectively. In this paper, we propose a new service model, namely, Cluster as a Service(Claa S), which is suitable for medium- and small-sized data centers to solve these problems in a relatively easy and general way. The idea behind this model is virtualizing the cluster environment for distributed application frameworks. Most applications can directly run in the virtual cluster environment without any modification, which is a great advantage. Based on lightweight containers, we implement a real system of Claa S named Docklet to prove the feasibility of this service model. Meanwhile, we preliminarily design the definition of applications to make them easy to deploy. Finally, we present several examples and evaluate the entire system.

Vehicle Ad hoc NETworks(VANET) can enhance traffic safety and improve traffic efficiency through cooperative communication among vehicles, roadside infrastructure, and traffic management centers. To guarantee secure service provision in VANET, message authentication is important. Moreover, a vehicle user's private information can also be leaked during service provision. A protection mechanism is needed to prevent such leakage. Therefore, we propose a conditional privacy-preserving and authentication scheme for secure service provision in VANETs. The proposed scheme not only satisfies the security requirements of VANETs, but also optimizes the calculation process of signature generation and verification. We carry out a detailed comparative analysis. The result shows that the proposed scheme is more efficient than existing schemes in terms of communication overhead and computational cost. Therefore, our scheme is suitable for secure service provision in VANETs.

Nowadays, both vehicular active safety service and user infotainment service have become two core applications for urban Vehicular Delay Tolerant Networks(u VDTNs). Both core applications require a high data transmission capacity over u VDTNs. In addition, the connection between any two vehicles in u VDTNs is intermittent and opportunistic. Intermittent data dissemination over u VDTNs is a stringent and challenging issue. In this paper,we propose Intermittent Geocast Routing(IGR). For the first step, IGR has to estimate the active connection time interval via the moving directions and velocities between any two vehicles. Second, the throughput function for u VDTNs is fitted by building a wavelet neural network traffic model. Third, the throughput function within the effective connection time interval is integrated to obtain the forwarding capability estimation of the node. Fourth, a high-efficiency geocast routing algorithm using the node forwarding capability for u VDTNs is designed. Finally, IGR is simulated on the opportunistic Network Environment simulator. Experimental results show that IGR can greatly improve the packet delivery ratio, transmission delay, delay jitter, and packet loss rate compared with the state of the art.

With the rapid development of the Internet, general-purpose web crawlers have increasingly become unable to meet people's individual needs as they are no longer efficient enough to fetch deep web pages. The presence of several deep web pages in the websites and the widespread use of Ajax make it difficult for generalpurpose web crawlers to fetch information quickly and efficiently. On the basis of the original Robots Exclusion Protocol(REP), a Robots Exclusion and Guidance Protocol(REGP) is proposed in this paper, by integrating the independent scattered expansions of the original Robots Protocol developed by major search engine companies.Our protocol expands the file format and command set of the REP as well as two labels of the Sitemap Protocol.Through our protocol, websites can express their aspects of requirements for restrictions and guidance to the visiting crawlers, and provide a general-purpose fast access of deep web pages and Ajax pages for the crawlers,and facilitates crawlers to easily obtain the open data on websites effectively with ease. Finally, this paper presents a specific application scenario, in which both a website and a crawler work with support from our protocol. A series of experiments are also conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed protocol.

Virtualization technology has been widely used to virtualize single server into multiple servers, which not only creates an operating environment for a virtual machine-based cloud computing platform but also potentially improves its efficiency. Currently, most task scheduling-based algorithms used in cloud computing environments are slow to convergence or easily fall into a local optimum. This paper introduces a Greedy Particle Swarm Optimization(G&PSO) based algorithm to solve the task scheduling problem. It uses a greedy algorithm to quickly solve the initial particle value of a particle swarm optimization algorithm derived from a virtual machine-based cloud platform. The archived experimental results show that the algorithm exhibits better performance such as a faster convergence rate, stronger local and global search capabilities, and a more balanced workload on each virtual machine. Therefore, the G&PSO algorithm demonstrates improved virtual machine efficiency and resource utilization compared with the traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm.

Essential proteins are those necessary for the survival or reproduction of species and discovering such essential proteins is fundamental for understanding the minimal requirements for cellular life, which is also meaningful to the disease study and drug design. With the development of high-throughput techniques, a large number of Protein-Protein Interactions(PPIs) can be used to identify essential proteins at the network level. Up to now, though a series of network-based computational methods have been proposed, it is still a challenge to improve the prediction precision as the high false positives in PPI networks. In this paper, we propose a new method GOS to identify essential proteins by integrating the Gene expressions, Orthology, and Subcellular localization information.The gene expressions and subcellular localization information are used to determine whether a neighbor in the PPI network is reliable. Only reliable neighbors are considered when we analyze the topological characteristics of a protein in a PPI network. We also analyze the orthologous attributes of each protein to reflect its conservative features, and use a random walk model to integrate a protein's topological characteristics and its orthology. The experimental results on the yeast PPI network show that the proposed method GOS outperforms the ten existing methods DC, BC, CC, SC, EC, IC, NC, Pe C, ION, and CSC.

Multiview video can provide more immersive perception than traditional single 2-D video. It enables both interactive free navigation applications as well as high-end autostereoscopic displays on which multiple users can perceive genuine 3-D content without glasses. The multiview format also comprises much more visual information than classical 2-D or stereo 3-D content, which makes it possible to perform various interesting editing operations both on pixel-level and object-level. This survey provides a comprehensive review of existing multiview video synthesis and editing algorithms and applications. For each topic, the related technologies in classical 2-D image and video processing are reviewed. We then continue to the discussion of recent advanced techniques for multiview video virtual view synthesis and various interactive editing applications. Due to the ongoing progress on multiview video synthesis and editing, we can foresee more and more immersive 3-D video applications will appear in the future.
