  • An Interactive Visual Analytics Framework for Multi-Field Data in a Geo-Spatial Context

    Climate research produces a wealth of multivariate data. These data often have a geospatial reference and so it is of interest to show them within their geospatial context. One can consider this configuration as a multifield visualization problem, where the geo-space provides the expanse of the field. However, there is a limit on the amount of multivariate information that can be fit within a certain spatial location, and the use of linked multivariate information displays has previously been devised to bridge this gap. In this paper we focus on the interactions in the geographical display, present an implementation that uses Google Earth, and demonstrate it within a tightly linked parallel coordinates display. Several other visual representations, such as pie and bar charts are integrated into the Google Earth display and can be interactively manipulated. Further, we also demonstrate new brushing and visualization techniques for parallel coordinates, such as fixed-window brushing and correlation-enhanced display. We conceived our system with a team of climate researchers, who already made a few important discoveries using it. This demonstrates our system's great potential to enable scientific discoveries, possibly also in other domains where data have a geospatial reference.

  • Methods to Identify Individual Eddy Structures in Turbulent Flow

    Turbulent flows are intrinsic to many processes in science and engineering, and efforts to elucidate the physics of turbulence are of critical importance to many fields. However, ongoing efforts to achieve a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of turbulent flow are hindered by the difficulty of quantifying the complex, nonlinear interactions between individual eddies in these flows. The difficulty of this task is compounded by the lack of robust methods for accurately identifying individual eddy structures and characterizing their dynamic evolution and organization across multiple scales. In this paper we address this problem by proposing several novel approaches for more accurately segmenting individual eddy structures in turbulent flows.

  • Similarity-Based 3-D Atmospheric Nucleation Data Visualization and Analysis

    Atmospheric nucleation is a process of phase transformation, which serves a significant role in many atmospheric and technological processes. To simulate atmospheric nucleation activities, certain molecular models with three-dimensional (3-D) structures are generated. Analyzing these 3-D molecular models can help promote understanding of nucleation processes. Unfortunately, the ability to understand atmospheric nucleation processes is greatly restricted due to lack of efficient visual data exploration tools. In this paper, we present a data visualization solution to visualize and classify 3-D molecular crystals. We developed a novel algorithm for calculating similarity between the 3-D molecular crystals, and further improved the overall system performance with GPU (graphics processing unit) acceleration.

  • Edge Bundling in Information Visualization

    The edge, which can encode relational data in graphs and multidimensional data in parallel coordinates plots, is an important visual primitive for encoding data in information visualization research. However, when data become very large, visualizations often suffer from visual clutter as thousands of edges can easily overwhelm the display and obscure underlying patterns. Many edge-bundling techniques have been proposed to reduce visual clutter in visualizations. In this survey, we briefly introduce the visual-clutter problem in visualizations. Thereafter, we review the cost-based, geometry-based, and image-based edge-bundling methods for graphs, parallel coordinates, and flow maps. We then describe the various visualization applications that use edge-bundling techniques and discuss the evaluation studies concerning the effectiveness of edge-bundling methods. An edge-bundling taxonomy is proposed at the end of this survey.

  • A Study of Animated Transition in Similarity-Based Tiled Image Layout

    For many information visualization applications, showing the transition when interacting with the data is critically important as it can help users better perceive the changes and understand the underlying data. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of animated transition in a tiled image layout where the spiral arrangement of the images is based on their similarity. Three aspects of animated transition are considered, including animation steps, animation actions, and flying paths. Exploring and weighting the advantages and disadvantages of different methods for each aspect and in conjunction with the characteristics of the spiral image layout, we present an integrated solution, called AniMap, for animating the transition from an old layout to a new layout when a different image is selected as the query image. We show the effectiveness of our animated transition solution by demonstrating experimental results and conducting a comparative user study.

  • ManyInsights: A Visual Analytics Approach to Supporting Effective Insight Management

    Although significant progress has been made towards effective insight discovery in visual analytics systems, there are few effective approaches for managing the large number of insights generated in visual analytics processes. This paper presents ManyInsights, a multidimensional visual analytics prototype that integrates several novel insight management approaches proposed by the authors in their previous work. These approaches include insight annotation, browsing, retrieval, organization, and association. This paper also reports a long-term case study that evaluated ManyInsights with a domain expert, realistic analytic tasks, and real datasets.

  • Portraying User Life Status from Microblogging Posts

    Microblogging services provide a novel and popular communication scheme for Web users to share information and express opinions by publishing short posts, which usually reflect the users' daily life. We can thus model the users' daily status and interests according to their posts. Because of the high complexity and the large amount of the content of the microblog users' posts, it is necessary to provide a quick summary of the users' life status, both for personal users and commercial services. It is non-trivial to summarize the life status of microblog users, particularly when the summary is conducted over a long period. In this paper, we present a compact interactive visualization prototype, LifeCircle, as an efficient summary for exploring the long-term life status of microblog users.   • An Online Visualization System for Streaming Log Data of Computing Clusters

    Monitoring a computing cluster requires collecting and understanding log data generated at the core, computer, and cluster levels at run time. Visualizing the log data of a computing cluster is a challenging problem due to the complexity of the underlying dataset: it is streaming, hierarchical, heterogeneous, and multi-sourced. This paper presents an integrated visualization system that employs a two-stage streaming process mode. Prior to the visual display of the multi-sourced information, the data generated from the clusters is gathered, cleaned, and modeled within a data processor. The visualization supported by a visual computing processor consists of a set of multivariate and time variant visualization techniques, including time sequence chart, treemap, and parallel coordinates. Novel techniques to illustrate the time tendency and abnormal status are also introduced. We demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed system framework on a commodity cloud-computing platform.
